The Fern Ticket

The Fern Ticket I

*In the Forest of Dean, to have had your first amourous experience in the forest was to get your ‘fern ticket’

A taboo so sweet

A myth so endearing

A lover’s retreat

A comfortable clearing

Where prying eyes need not inquire

Far from the church spire

Here where only nature intrudes

And lover’s do the things they do

Within the folds of thick forest

Beneath the branches where birds and bees nest

They share together nature’s delight

With woodland cover and sunlight

In rhythm with rain, in motion with moon

To give and take, to enjoy the bloom

To dance for days and to love with it

Come with amour, here lies the fern ticket

  1. Just happened on this site, attracted by ‘Fern Ticket’. I grew up in Westbury, West Shropshire and the term was quite widely used in a ‘nudge nudge, wink wink’ way to suggest that such an item was required to court the local girls in an village, presumably to ‘roll in the fern’ as opposed to the ‘hay’. There’s also, or was as I think it closed, a pub in Cinderford, called The Fern Ticket.

    1. Thank you so much for commenting, Bill and for dropping this gem here. So fascinated by this almost esoteric, local knowledge and feel very honoured that folks the area continue to share more of the lore around it. That it eas common in Shropshire too is news to me. I wonder if its a West Country thing or actually more general to forested areas. Any idea? Thanks again!
